NHF Partners with the Women’s Recovery Association, Expanding Portfolio of Offerings and Seeing Positive Outcomes and Feedback from Participants

June 12th, 2012

In September 2011, NutraHealthFood (NHF) partnered with the Women’s Recovery Association (WRA) to bring educational lectures focused on nutrition, health and wellness to their patients enrolled in alcohol and/or drug treatment. Passionate about health and wellness and instilling healthy lifestyle habits in patients in every position in life, Vilma Andari was inspired to forge a partnership with the WRA and help these women faced with unique health obstacles, thus branching into a new arena of health and wellness.

For Vilma, working with the WRA proved a new and challenging venture. She expanded her portfolio of offerings beyond focusing on children, Hispanics, diabetics/pre-diabetics and obese/overweight patients to those with complicated health issues in an entirely different facet of life—substance abuse. Though different, the end goal and result proved similar: transform the way that individuals approach health and wellness in order to instill healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes for life.

Vilma says, “As a health professional and wellness leader, I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to educate and empower women who are struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. By utilizing my gender-specific program, I address the complexities of each woman’s needs and treatment goals by individually helping these patients identify strategies that can help resolve their personal health issues with respect to nutrition, physical health and exercise. The program not only benefits the patients, but also benefits their families and the community as a whole.”

As with all of the programs Vilma has implemented and patients she has worked with, there are countless stories of struggle and triumph, no matter how small or large. For these women in recovery, the daily battle between staying substance free and relapsing often means that health and wellness is cast aside. In addition, the

harsh side-effects and implications of substance abuse creates new health problems that Vilma addresses specifically in her custom health and wellness program for women in recovery.

To date, Vilma has worked with nearly 400 patients at the WRA and seen dramatic improvements in the way that many approach eating and physical activity. With this group, the focus is on being more mindful about eating behaviors and amount of physical activity, moving from erratic eating patterns—often caused by the highs and lows of substance abuse—to being not only more consistent with eating in general, but also more conscience about having a balanced and nutritious diet.

Three main categories focused on to help with substance replacement and recovery:

  • Food/mood consumption—stabilizing consumption and disassociating consumption with mood swings and cravings
  • Stable & balanced meal guidelines—following a more structured meal plan, starting with eating breakfast
  • Mindfulness (nutrient consumption and physical activity)—replacing high consumption of processed foods with high sugar content to nutrient rich foods

“We focus a lot on having your mind and body in sync, plus being aware of your environment and how your decisions affect your health and mood,” says Vilma. She adds, “The WRA women are discovering—and for some it is the first time in a long time—what it feels like to be healthy, plus how to nurture their bodies by moving more and having healthier eating habits to decrease mood swings and cravings. For example, you can boost your endorphins through physical activity rather than using alcohol or drugs. These all help to stabilize eating and curb addictions.”

What the WRA participants are saying…

“Thanks so much for your class on Wellness and Nutrition. It’s really made a difference – all the girls at the House are now checking labels for ingredients, calories, fats, and nutrition. And, we at WRA think about better menu options for dinner and snacks. Thanks again!” –Katie

“You made a huge difference in my life – I am motivated to exercise and nourish my body with all of the right nutrients. I am feeling healthy and full of energy.” –Anonymous

“Your lectures are inspirational. I’m now eating breakfast—something I never did before—and am mindful about my portions.” –Anonymous
